An experiment in painting with just black oil paint. I was curious to see how much my years of experience with charcoal on paper might transfer to oils on board. Interestingly it was a similar process in discovering the variability and sensitivity of mark-making required to build the textures of the scene.
The setting is my home town of Ipswich, Suffolk, and the docks are a place I have walked countless times. Painting it in this way has brought a new kind of atmosphere back to my perception of the docks, with a scene that feels entirely from another time.
